Mount Holyoke uses Apture to Connect and Re-Connect Alumnae

Colleen

Today’s featured user is Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. This all-female liberal arts college is the oldest continuing institution for higher education for women in the world. We found them actively using Apture to keep their alumnae connected and share what’s happening on campus and off. Here are some of our favorite examples:

  • Apture aids in career counseling. Cori Ashworth, Mount Holyoke’s Alumnae Career and Professional Consultant uses Apture to offer Scribd links to career assessment tools, aimed at new alumnae and aiding in the career search.

  • Stay connected to your Alma Mater with help from Apture. Here, you can find and read many of the alumnae clubs’ newsletters without leaving the page, or opening a new window. In the screenshot below, you can see the Piedmont Mount Holyoke Club’s newsletter for Spring 2009.

  • Use Apture to make things more descriptive and inviting. One of my favorite finds on the Mount Holyoke site is their use of Apture to entice alumnae on a trip that was part of their 2008 Alumnae Travel Program. With Apture, potential travelers on the trip to the Black Sea are able to see and read more about the destinations they would be visiting, adding real dimension — it makes me want to go on it! Oh, and check out all the related media on each of the windows, too!

  • Apture-enhanced coverage of an event. Finally, I thought I’d finish up with some Apturized coverage of an event at Mount Holyoke called Future in Communications. You can find audio of the keynote speeches, as well as additional information relevant to those speeches – all in one place. How fitting, using new communication tools to bring users into an event about Future in Communications!

Are you an educational institution that is using Apture to reach students, alumni, or other communities? Do you know of others that are doing this? Let us know in the comments, or on Twitter! We’d love to feature you on our blog or in our newsletter!

I am the web master of the Alumnae Association of Mount Holyoke College web site. We have found Apture very easy to implement across the web site. I do even have to do anything for linked PDF files. Apture automatically exports them to Scribd. It also automatically detects MP3 files so that I really do not need to embed a separate player. The service really enhances the site while not taking our visitors away from it.

I’m the editor of the Mount Holyoke Alumnae Quarterly magazine, and we also use Apture to enhance the print articles when we post them online. For example, in an article about alumnae artists, I linked via Apture to still images of artists’ work, and provided Wikipedia definitions of some terms nonartists might not know. It’s incredibly easy to use,and gives our readers online more than the print magazine can provide.
